Why Your Skin Breaks Out More in Summer

Why Your Skin Breaks Out More in Summer

Have you ever caught your reflection in the middle of July and thought, wait...why am I breaking out right now? Everything was fine a month ago, and suddenly there's congestion and little bumps showing up out of nowhere.

If that's you, take a breath. You're not doing anything wrong, and you're so not the only one. Summer does this to skin, predictably, every single year. Here's the best news I can give you: once you understand why it's happening, it's completely fixable.

But before we dive in, let me introduce myself. Hi! I'm Kenda, the esthetician and founder of Blush Bar here in Stockton, California. My doors have been open since 2018, and thanks to this little corner of the internet, I get to look after skin well beyond my studio across the country and now too. In all those years I've had my hands on more faces than I could ever count, through every kind of skin and every season of it. The breakouts I'm about to walk you through are some of the most common things I see, especially in the summertime.

So here's the short version before the deeper dive: you break out more in summer because heat ramps up your oil while sweat, sunscreen, and dead skin get trapped on top and clog your pores. More activity, more travel, and honestly more stress than anyone admits all pile on.

Now let's get into what's really going on, and how I'd keep you clear regardless of all of the above.

Why summer makes your skin act up

Your skin has one main job in the heat, and that's to sweat and keep you cool. It takes that job seriously, which is where a lot of the trouble starts. Warm weather makes your oil glands more active, so you're simply producing more oil than usual. You're also out more, moving more, living more. All that sweat sits on your skin, and when it lingers too long it mixes with oil and dead skin and settles into your pores. That's where the congestion and those little bumps begin.

Then there's your barrier, the layer that's supposed to protect you. Between more travel, more touching your face, and more washing because you feel greasy, that barrier tends to take a beating in summer. A stressed barrier gets reactive, which means it breaks out more easily.

Here in the Central Valley, all of this hits harder than most places. When it's triple digits for days on end, your skin barely gets a chance to reset, so even people who stay clear the rest of the year start to notice it.

The part most people miss: stress

Here's what I wish more people knew, because it changes everything about how you treat it. A lot of summer breakouts aren't really about summer at all. When I look at who's in my treatment room these days, the common thread isn't just heat, it's stress, school, work, big life changes, and usually a calendar that never slows down on top of it all.

Summer looks like it should be the restful season. For a lot of people, it's the opposite, and just like your body, your skin most definitely keeps score. So if you're breaking out and genuinely nothing about your routine has changed, this might be why. If it is, please be gentle with yourself. This kind of breakout isn't a sign you're failing at skincare. It usually means your skin is asking for support and calm, not punishment. That's a big part of how I treat skin here at Blush Bar, and it's a big part of how you should treat it at home too.

Your summer routine probably needs a tune-up

None of this means overhauling everything. Honestly, most people just need to adjust a few things they're already doing.

The first one is simple: rotate your sunscreen the way you'd rotate your moisturizer. The richer formulas that felt lovely in winter can be too heavy once it's hot, and heavy plus sweat is how pores get clogged. Reach for something lighter for the season. My easy pick is the Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50, because it sprays right on, which means reapplying over makeup stops being a whole thing. The best sunscreen really is just the one you'll actually keep using.

Next, ease up on your skin. When it feels oily, the instinct is to wash it three or four times a day, but that strips your barrier, and a stripped barrier just makes more oil to catch up. Twice a day is plenty. Same goes for touching your face, which I know is a hard habit to break in the heat.

The last one matters most: keep exfoliating, just gently. Summer skin feels reactive, so people quit exfoliating entirely, and then all those dead cells pile up and trap everything underneath. People tend to think they need to be scrubbing harder, but really they just need to be exfoliating smarter. I’m often recommending something mild like the Vivant Mandelic Duo, which keeps your pores clear without roughing up your skin.

Don't forget your back

Every year right before summer, I get the same request, and I love that people finally ask: help me clear my back so I feel good in a tank top or a swimsuit. Back breakouts are so common in the heat. Sweat gets trapped under your clothes, your workout gear, your bra straps, and the skin back there is hard to reach and easy to ignore all year. Rinse off as soon as you can after you sweat, keep damp clothes off your skin, and use a gentle exfoliating cleanser on the area. When it's stubborn, this is one of those things a professional treatment clears far faster than anything you can do reaching over your own shoulder.

The cloudy-day sunscreen myth

This is the one that costs people the most, so let me be clear about it: "It's warm and cloudy, so I can skip reapplying." Not true, and it's the myth I hear tossed around weekly. Clouds don't block UV the way people assume. Up to 80% of UV rays pass right through cloud cover, and UVA, the aging and damaging kind, is around all day, all year, whether or not you can see the sun. So yes, you can absolutely still burn and build up real damage on a gray day. Reapply anyway.

When home care isn't enough

Sometimes the congestion gets ahead of you, and no amount of at-home care fully clears it. That's exactly when a treatment earns its place. My one rule for summer is that we only do corrective treatments that are summer-safe, and we always pair them with diligent SPF, reapplication, and a good vitamin C.

For summer congestion, the treatment I recommend the most is DMK Enzyme Therapy. I've nicknamed it the mummified facial, and you'll get why the second you feel it tighten. It works with your skin instead of against it, flushing out everything that's built up and leaving you genuinely clearer, never stripped. When skin needs strengthening and smoothing on top of that, I'll pair it with Herbal Collagen Induction Therapy, and for a deeper clarifying reset there's the Lira Pure Peel. All summer-safe, as long as we protect your skin properly afterward. (If dark spots and pigmentation are your real concern, that's its own whole conversation, and one I'll get into soon.)

Let me show you what that looks like in real life. I have a client in nursing school right now, juggling a schedule that would stress anyone out, dealing with breakouts she'd never had before in her life. Over just two treatments, DMK Enzyme Therapy and Herbal Collagen Induction Therapy, her texture and her barrier improved so much. At home I've got her on the SIV Biome Balancing Serum and the ByAri Rx Seabuckthorn Skin Oil to keep her barrier calm between visits. Same person, much happier skin, in a matter of weeks. That's the part I love.

A few things clients ask me all the time

Do you really need sunscreen on a cloudy day? Yes. Up to 80% of UV passes through clouds, and UVA is present all day no matter the weather, so you can still burn and accumulate damage. Reapply through the day.

Can stress actually cause breakouts? It really can. Stress affects your hormones and your skin barrier both, and I see stress-related breakouts constantly, especially in summer. Supporting your skin gently, and your stress where you can, makes a real difference.

How do I clear my back before summer? Rinse off soon after you sweat, keep damp clothing off your skin, exfoliate gently, and come see me if it's stubborn. Backs respond beautifully to professional care.

Are facials and peels safe in the summer? Yes, as long as they're the right ones and you stay diligent with SPF and reapplication afterward. That's what "summer-safe" means, and it's how I build every summer treatment.

Is acne worse in summer or winter? It depends on your skin, but for a lot of people summer is the harder season thanks to heat, sweat, and oil. Winter tends to bring dryness instead. If you notice a pattern, let your routine shift with it.

Come see me

If your skin's been unpredictable this summer, you really don't have to just wait it out. Come in and we'll look at where your skin actually is right now, and build a summer-safe treatment around it. Whatever you do between now and then: wear your sunscreen, reapply it, and be a little gentle with yourself.

See you in the studio. :]
